CAMDEN, N.J. — The Camden Riversharks held their open tryouts for the 2015 season on Sunday, March 29th, and as a result, have invited three players from the tryouts to spring training.
Right-handed pitcher Alex Polanco, 20, is from Pennsauken, NJ and a 2012 graduate of Pennsauken High School. Drafted by the New York Yankees in the 23rd round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Western Oklahoma State College, Polanco spent the past two seasons playing with the Gulf Coast League Yankees, posting a 3-1 record over 19 innings pitched. As a player at Pennsauken High School, he also excelled at the plate, and led all South Jersey baseball players in home runs during the month of April 2012.
Outfielder Wander Nunez, 24, has also been invited to spring training. A graduate of Frankford High School in Philadelphia, Nunez was drafted twice, first by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 48th round of the 2009 MLB Draft and again by the Washington Nationals in the 36th round of the 2010 MLB Draft. He began his professional career playing in the Nationals organization, recording 29 hits in 40 games with their Gulf Coast League affiliate. Nunez played locally with the Newark Bears during the 2013 season, batting .302 with 19 RBI in 32 appearances. A native of the Dominican Republic, he also attended Western Oklahoma State College.
Catcher Eddie Sorondo, 23, is a Jersey City, NJ, native and a graduate of Marist High School in Bayonne, NJ, and played college baseball at Delaware State University. Sorondo earned all-state and all-conference honors as a four-year varsity starter in high school, and achieved continued success as a starter for the DSU Hornets and earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference First-Team honors as a sophomore. He started 29 games and recorded 33 RBI in his senior season, and was selected as the MEAC Player of the Week in May 2014.
